Background Influences

Noel is influenced primarily by the environment around him, no matter where he is. He is a keen world traveller, relishing the differences and similarities he sees between the cities in which he shoots. He also counts amongst his influences the work of artists as diverse as Henry Cartier Besson, Caravaggio, Dorothea Lange, Nick Miners, and Eugène Atget.

In his early years, Noel was also strongly influenced by his late uncle, Tom McIntyre, a poet and playwright. Speaking in interview recently, Noel explained -

“In an interview, my uncle was once asked what advice he would give to young people wanting to get into writing, poetry, theatre or the arts. He said - “Learn to trust your dreams. Learn the language of your dreams.”

It was short, sweet, and simple - but those words profoundly inspired me at the time, and have never left me since. Visual artists are dreamers and storytellers, and the language of our dreams is our Art”.
