Stories of faith and devotion

Images from Semana Santa in Spain - Mallorca and Malaga. Solemn processions, candlelight, incense and the slow steady rhythm of dead beat drums, the atmosphere is like nothing on Earth.

Santo Cristo del Calvario, this paso (float) depicting Christ on the cross is carried through the narrow streets of Malaga on Good Friday. The Paso weighs several tonnes and is one of the most iconic sights of Semana Santa in Malaga.

A massive, ornate float, or paso, is carried through the streets of Málaga during Semana Santa by a large group of men — easily 40 to 60 strong. They move in unison, swaying rhythmically as they follow the precise beat set by the leader, their collective effort both disciplined and almost hypnotic. The weight of the float is immense, yet the procession flows forward steadily, ince by inch.

Inch by inch.

A group of “costaleros” await direction from their “capataz” at the assembly area in the narrow streets of Malaga just before they join the procession.

Which way now.

In the assembly area at Semana Santa, Malaga, not an official one but just a side street, a priest was briefing his “acólitos” before their entry to the procession.

I thought to myself, he’s probably saying, “ don’t let me down, the boss is watching”.
